As the party progressed, Corwin had to keep himself entertained since I was technically hosting. He’d made the rounds, introducing himself to strangers and reminiscing with old classmates, never taking his eyes off me for more than a moment. Whether I was hosting a silly game, helping to cut the cake, or taking photographs, I’d catch him glancing and smirking my way. I’d managed to have a second alone with Emilia in between games where she pulled me aside and said, “I cannot believe how good he looks. You weren’t kidding.”

“I told you that, despite what you believe, I never hold back on you.”

“He was always cute,” she laughed, “but hot damn, you’re lucky he didn’t get fat or go bald.”

“Seriously, he’s beautiful … in every way, Emilia.”

“You know, he looks the best when he’s looking at you. That shit eating grin won’t come off his face for God’s sake. He’s going to get lots of wrinkles if you end up together.”

I blushed and glanced over at him. “That’s okay, I’m perfectly okay with giving him sexy laugh lines.”

I started the next game minutes later and soon after we were cleaning up all the gifts Emilia had opened. Corwin, Ben, and Josh moved all of them into the nursery and I couldn’t help but snicker when he rolled his eyes at Josh carrying the heaviest gift. My heart felt full looking at him there, feeling comfortable with my friends, yet speaking to me through facial expressions and unspoken thoughts.

As I put away food in the kitchen, Emilia and Corwin ended up talking and catching up. She had her back to me, but he wouldn’t stop staring at me with smiling eyes. I couldn’t decipher their conversation no matter how hard I tried to read their lips. I almost didn’t want to know, because the mystery made it more special than it probably was.

Though when Emilia turned around, her eyes protruding at me suggestively, like she had just seen a fresh box of Krispy Kreme donuts, I knew it was something big. As nonchalantly as possible, I made my way to her bedroom with her a few minutes later while Corwin told Ben about his baseball team. Closing the door she started dancing like Tina Turner, causing her dress to flail in every direction.

“Emilia! Stop, you’ll go into labor!”

“Please,” she scoffed. “This baby hasn’t even flipped over yet.”

“What happened?” I asked in an eager whisper.

“Holy shit, that man is so smitten with you.” She had to pause to dramatically fan herself. “I’m not saying another word, but do not, I repeat, DO NOT let him go.”

“What the hell? You’re seriously not going to tell me what he said?”

“Nope,” she laughed haughtily. “I’ll just say, he really is the man of your dreams … just trust me.”

We left the shower and picked up Chinese to eat at my house. I loved that Corwin wasn’t ready to leave my side again, and with the way he’d kept his hands all over me throughout the night, I knew he’d missed me as much as I’d missed him.
